We Restore Lives, One Tooth at a Time

In 2003, a coalition of local churches recognized a dire need in our Appalachian community — the need for medical and dental care for those who cannot afford it. They pitched in and rented a medical/dental van for an intensive, three-day free clinic. At the end of those three days, hundreds of dental patients still had to be turned away, many in tears. Clearly, something more would have to be done.

Today, the dream of those founding churches has been realized in the form of the Blue Ridge Free Dental Clinic, now in a permanent location in Cashiers, North Carolina. The Clinic provides high quality restorative dental care to hundreds of needy patients each year from the surrounding tri-county area, many of whom have never seen the inside of a dentist’s office.

Free Clinic of SW Washington Free Dental, Vision and Medical Clinic

The Free Clinic of SW Washington provides free, basic, walk-in health care, together with dental, vision and specialty care.  The Clinic was started 19 years ago by Dr. Sam Beall who saw a real need in the community to help those who could not afford basic medical care.  Through the work of Dr. Beall and other physicians and community leaders such as Dr. Otis Burris, Dr. Susan Davis, Mari Greves and hundreds of others who help us to get where we are today, we are now the largest free clinic in the state.  In 2007, it was estimated that 40,000 people in Southwest Washington were without health care coverage.  From June 2008 to July 2009 volunteer physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, lab technicians, pharmacists, hygienists and other volunteers donated over 18,000 hours to help these patients.  Our services prevent unnecessary emergency room visits, keep people from missing work, and keep children healthy and able to stay in school.
